FrameCraft™June 2023
FrameCraft is my diploma project at ECAL, that focuses on redesigning the production process of custom made bikepacking framebags.
To lay the foundation for my research, I draw upon a prior experience operating a small business where I handcrafted custom-fit bikepacking bags. Bikepacking involves using bags for touring by bike, which are directly attached to the frame instead of using a traditional pannier rack. However, due to the unique nature of each frame, bikepacking bag producers often encounter challenges in achieving a proper bag-to-bike fit. The proposed solution is to automatize each step of the manufacturing process and establish a “Micro-Factory” that aims to bridge the gap between custom craftsmanship and industrial efficiency, enabling the creation of unique, tailor-made pieces. This realistic approach not only addresses the challenges faced by bikepacking bag producers but also promotes local production in Europe, ensuring efficiency and sustainability and tackles the ethical issues linked to a very labor intensive activity such as industrial level sewing.
